Youth Projects
There are an abundance of ways to make a difference in the lives of our children. Youth Program options provide volunteers with the unique opportunity to empower young people and positively impact their lives.
Youth Mentoring
Administrators and teachers from local schools often identify children who need special attention or seem to have lost interest in school. These children are then matched with community members and/or volunteers that become their personal mentors and promote and inspire healthy lifestyles and attitudes amongst youth and high school students.
Life Skills Training
An eight-week "Life Skills" course guideline with suggested activities is available and can be adapted in many ways to address different age levels and durations. The course concentrates on developing a respect for one's self and others, as well as the ability to identify and utilize positive methods to meet social challenges. Volunteers address topics such as self-esteem, peer pressure, and conflict resolution strategies.
Classroom Teaching
Volunteers pursuing a teaching career are often able to assist or teach in the classroom, depending on the school at question's needs. Materials and resources are extremely limited and volunteers will find the use of imagination and creativity as well as natural and recycled resources very helpful.
Tutoring
There is always a demand for supplemental education for school-age children. The children of Belize, like children all over the world can often use the special one-on-one attention a volunteer can give.
Jump Start Summer English Classes
In the summer, volunteers working in the Jump Start Program teach English to non-English speaking children who are ready to enter into primary school. Volunteers plan their daily curriculum, schedule, and activities.
Summer Day Camps
Volunteers organize and conduct fun and educational activities throughout the summer for children of all ages. They plan, design, and coordinate day camps and then arrange activities, locations, and schedules. Popular activities include arts and crafts, music, gardening, sports, story time, and games. Children are eager to participate in such programs, and as the summer progresses the number of participants usually increases as students themselves spread the word.
Mural Painting
The designing and painting of murals is an excellent way to teaches children valuable skills such as organization, teamwork, respect, concentration, and attention to detail. Additionally, the mural experience is uniquely educational as children help design the way that an important message will be communicated to the general public. Murals generally address issues faced by children and teens like drugs and alcohol and HIV/AIDS.
Extracurricular Activities and Events
Volunteers create fun, practical, and creative activities and events that promote a healthy drug-free lifestyle for our youth. Children in the past have enjoyed making and flying kites, painting faces, performing dance or drama, creating arts, and making music. Working with youth opens unlimited possibilities and is always fulfilling.Events such as Children’s Day, Drug Awareness Week, September Celebrations, World AIDS Day our AIDS Orphan March and our Christmas party offer opportunities to promote healthy lifestyles and promote self-esteem. Volunteers help organize activities, locate any necessary resources or funding, and collaborate with community members to plan and promote the event.
